The
most awaited festival in Bengal is
Durga Puja. Since the Puja is held in
early autumn i.e. in "Sharat", this is
also referred to as "Sharadiya".
The countdown for the Puja begins with
Mahalaya, the first phase of the full moon.
A
large earthen image is made of Goddess Durga with her consort
and family, Lakhsmi - Saraswati - Kartik - Ganesh - Kalabau
- their pets, profusely decorated with intricate dresses and
ornaments. The actual Puja starts on "Shasthi", the
sixth day of full moon, with "Bodhan", celebrated
with pomp and grandeur on "Saptami", "Ashtami"
and "Navami". The main puja is organised as "Sandhi
Puja", the juncture between "Ashtami" and "Navami".
The
five festive days of Puja welcoming Devi Durga is aplomb with
rituals and accompanied with dhak, dhunuchi and shiuli. Sharat's
clear blue skies with their fleecy white clouds, kash flowers
in full bloom, feverish preparation for the pujas,gift, good
food, plans for long adda session with friends.
